Dear Dan:I just wanted to thank you and your crews for the support and guidance in the air testing work you performed at the Cryovac, Simpsonville Plant. You were a pleasure to work with. You performed the testing according to our schedules, and were quite flexible in conforming to our timetables. You responded to our calls for testing with short notice, even though you had other customers. We appreciate your adjusted schedules, willingness to work long hours, and ability to perform and comply to all our requests. You were always a pleasure to work with. Thanks for everything.
Sincerely,
George Ford, PE

Dear ATC:
Now that the most recent stack testing has been completed at [our facilities], I wanted to take the time to acknowledge the outstanding work performed by you and your crew while testing for the RCRA Boiler and Industrial Furnace recertification of pre-compliance. "Anyone" can test when all of the client's equipment is running smoothly for the duration of the testing. One of the marks of the professional is the ability to adjust to circumstances out of the norm and through effective communication with the plant personnel and still accomplish the task at hand. You and your team did this: it is recognized and appreciated. It is always a pleasure to note good work to others and if a recommendation from me is of value to you, please feel free to use the reference.
Very truly yours,
William E. Laque

Dear Dan,I would like to thank you and your employees for all the work you have performed for us in the past. As you know Cardinal Stone Company has tried to have a good working relationsip with the State Environmental Agencies. Since we have locations in two states, it is difficult to keep track of the requirements that are imposed. No matter what type of environmental testing is required, you have always been able to get the job done. You have always responded to our needs in a friendly and professional way. The quality of work that you perform helps us to keep the relationship with the state environmental agencies that we desire. You and your staff have always completed the work on time and have dealt with each testing situation in a confident and professional manner. Thanks again and I look forward to a continuing good relationship in the future.
Sincerely,
Karlton J. Yearick

Local company specializes in doing air quality tests
Tucked away in a residential section of Kannapoils is a private consulting company specializing in air quality testing nationwide - Analytical Testing Consultants, Inc.
Run by Dan Fink and Dan McCombs, the company has been in existance since July of 1981. They do on-site testing of air pollution with a specially equipped mobile unit.
ATC does testing in many different environments, including stationary sources, such as smokestacks, ambient sources, and offices and workplaces.
They can test for a wide variety of pollutants also, including particulate matter, sulfer dioxide, oxides of nitrogen, carbon monoxide, ozone and volatile organic compounds like hydrocarbons and certain solvents.
"A lot of companies are doing a lot of work toward pollution control these days," McCombs said. Stricter government regulations are one reason, but a concern for the environment is also a factor, he said.
The company has done emissions testing for gasoline terminals, military bases, manufacturing plants, including Cannon Mills, and the forestry industry, among others.
They have also done ambient testing -- testing of the air -- for governments, like Mecklenburg County, to determine the pollution index.
"The biggest contributor to air pollution is still the exhaust from vehicles," McCombs said.
ATC does both compliance testing, which is required for a company to get a permit from the state, and evaulation testing, which is usually done when a company expands or changes their equipment.
When the results of their testing shows a facility is out of compliance with government regulations, they offer advice on measures to correct the problems.
They have done some troubleshooting as well, he said.
"One company in Virginia that we did some testing for had three identical plants in three different states, but the electrostatic precipitator (a device which cleans pollutants from the smoke in a stack) in the Virginia plant kept breaking down. It was just disintegrating, and they couldn't figure out why."
"We did several tests for them and determined that the problem was the well-water they were using in their processing. It was literally eating up the precipitator."
Highly technical equipment is an integral part of ATC's business. The office is full of testing equipment and computers.
"We couldn't generate the reports we need to do for our customers without our computers," McCombs said.
McCombs and his employees have a real concern about the environment that is tempered by a professional neutrality on the issues. McCombs holds a degree in Environmental Health from Eastern Carolina University.
In the office is a poster with a photo from space of the earth and a caption that reads, "Love your mother."
"We naturally have a concern for the environment," said Keith Poole, project manager for the company, "but we have to stay more concerned with the accuracy and precision of what we do than with passing judgement."
